This has been a long time coming, but here, dear friends, is the official word that I will no longer continue to update this blog. It’s been four fun years since I started Your Business Card Sucks as a cheeky way to showcase business cards, but I haven’t maintained the energy to properly update the blog, to upgrade the site, and especially to continually cross-promote the site on various social media outlets. Rather than always feeling guilty, and simultaneously looking like a slacker, I’m closing it down. Sort of.

This isn’t actually the end. I’m going to keep this site live for the foreseeable future, and I’ll continue to collect submissions, but I’ve decided to move the updates from a blog to a dedicated Pinterest Board. I fully acknowledge the implicit debate about moving any type of content from a hosted website, which I own and operate, to a third-party, for-profit social network. However, I don’t think Pinterest is going anywhere, so I’m confident that it can prove an adequate alternate destination for readers. From my perspective, it’s super-easy to add pins, to give attribution to the original source, and to have multiple people contribute simultaneously. I’m hoping that this all leads to me posting more cards more frequently … since I’m on Pinterest all the freaking time!

Thanks for reading and submitting these past four years. I hope you’ll continue to join in the YBCS movement.

Here’s a card I worked on recently for Function1, an enterprise software company here in New York. These cards have been a long time in the making, but in the end they turned out great. All’s well that ends well, it seems.

These cards are printed on two sheets of Neenah Classic Crest Solar White 80#C, flush mounted to create a double-thick card. Each side is varnished after printing to prevent the colours running, and the logo on the back is printed as a custom metallic foil stamp.

That’s a close-up of the foil stamp. The orange foil took a bit of experimentation with temperature, pressure, and other printing techniques, but in the end, we got it. Thanks to Howie, Andy, and Manali at Alpine Creative Group for the printing.

1-800-Printing has created for themselves a 32pt card measuring 3.5″ diameter. Printed on silk laminated stock with the logo embossed and foil stamped. Spot UV on both sides. I don’t even want to know how much these cost per card.

Ladies, would this work?

From a man’s point of view, the card is entirely inconsequential. If it came from someone fancyable, then great, otherwise then a polite “thanks” ends the conversation.

Si Maclennan submitted this card to the site, and I posted it to remark on the brokenness of his name. I had recently seen some other designs using this same technique, to general success, but this time I had a hard time remembering the true name. Sima Clennan? Simac Lennan? I do get quite a few European submissions on the site so it genuinely could be a totally valid name I’m just unfamiliar with.

Maybe S. iMac Lennan if he’s a fan of initials-as-first-names and Apple products?

Anyway, as you can see Si has a pretty decent handle on typography and layout so go check out his site.

A few weeks ago, I spotted this card online. The cheeky text read “Hey I just met you, and this is crazy, but here’s my number [and then the number] so call me maybe.” And it was signed “David [redacted], Italian Guy You Just Met.” I half-chuckled for 2 seconds, before realising that this is tacky even by the standards of an Itanlian-Guy-You-Just-Met-in-what-I-presume-is-a-bar.

My curiousity was piqued when I received a submission with this card, a similar rendition, sans reference to the ethnic background of the card-owner.

Strangely, that one was submitted by a girl I went out with once but who didn’t fancy me enough for a second date. At least she held on to my card, I guess.

Soon after, I spotted this take-off for a dog adoption service, where the dog has his own “business card”.

Being a man of the Internet, I thought this was a spoof of the Italian Guy’s card, but being a good journalist that I am, I had to research this and find out what the hell is going on. A quick Google search informed me that this is actually a pop song by Carly Rae Jepsen, and the text of the card is the lyrics.

The Internet hasn’t left this alone completely, of course, and an appropriate LOLcat spoof has been born.

Regarding cards designed to pick up people, I’m still partial to the card of my pal Lauren, who has since found herself what looks like a permanent fella. But in her wild and single days, she used these, apparently.

I always love a nice illustrated card. Here, Claire Wood has submitted her card. Simple, pleasant, and shows her illustration style.

Here is the personal calling card of designer Rachy McKenzie. These cards were “created using hand generated typography and a range of bright colour combinations.”

This week I spotted the clever iPhone-inspired card from digital designer Frederic Tourrou. Considering the relative high polish of Tourrou’s site, I’m a little confused by the “hire me now” tagline, it seems more fitting for a junior design fresh out of school. Maybe something like “slide to contact” or “build my app” would be more appropriate.

A simple gloss-on-matte card from Belgian designer Olivier Piedboeuf. Well done. More specifically it’s a matte coated stock with spot UV.

And yes, we should all remark on the poor photograph considering this is a photography company. I guess shooting static objects is a particular art in itself, even compared to weddings.
